Auto-connect
Which settings make Colitu connect when the app opens, start with your computer or stay connected all the time on Windows, Android, iOS and Linux.
You don't have to connect Colitu by hand every time. There are two kinds of settings:
- Auto-connect: Colitu connects to the VPN as soon as the app opens.
- Start at sign-in or boot: Colitu (or the VPN) starts by itself when your computer or phone starts.
| Platform | Auto-connect | Start at sign-in or boot |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Yes, on by default | Start with Windows setting |
| Android | Yes, off by default | Android's Always-on VPN setting |
| iOS | Yes, on by default | None; use Always-on protection instead |
| Linux (beta) | Yes, on by default | Start at sign-in setting |
Windows
- Settings → Connection → Auto-connect: Colitu connects as soon as it opens. On by default.
- Settings → App → Start with Windows: Colitu starts in the tray when you sign in to Windows.
With both on, Colitu starts and connects the moment you sign in to Windows. If Keep running in the tray is on, protection also stays on after you close the window.
Android
Connect when the app opens: turn on Account → Features → Auto-connect. On Android this is off by default.
Connect when the phone starts: the Android app has no start-at-boot option of its own. Use Android's Always-on VPN setting instead:
- Tap Account → Features → Always-on protection; Android's VPN settings open.
- Tap the settings (gear) icon next to Colitu.
- Turn on Always-on VPN.
- Optionally also turn on Block connections without VPN on the same screen; this is Android's kill switch. Details: Kill switch.
Some manufacturers close background apps. If the connection drops by itself, check the battery settings in the Android guide.
iOS
- Account → Features → Auto-connect: connects as soon as the app opens. On by default.
- Account → Features → Always-on protection: if the VPN drops because the network changed or it was switched off in Control Centre, iOS reconnects it right away.
iOS has no setting for apps to start when the device boots; Always-on protection is what keeps the VPN on.
Linux (beta)
- Settings → Connection → Auto-connect: Colitu connects as soon as it opens. On by default.
- Settings → App → Start at sign-in: Colitu starts in the tray when you sign in. This uses your desktop's standard (XDG) autostart folder.
If you use TUN mode, Colitu asks for your sudo password again on the first connection after each fresh start, because the password is never written to disk.
How to turn it off
- Windows and Linux: in Settings, turn off Auto-connect and Start with Windows / Start at sign-in.
- Android: turn off Account → Features → Auto-connect. To turn off Always-on VPN, tap Always-on protection and switch off Always-on VPN for Colitu in Android's VPN settings.
- iOS: under Account → Features, turn off Auto-connect and Always-on protection.
