Torrents and P2P
Where torrent and P2P traffic is allowed on Colitu, why no server offers it right now and how to check the Torrent category.
Torrent and other P2P (peer-to-peer) traffic is only allowed on specially marked Colitu servers. Right now no server has this mark, so P2P is currently not offered.
The rule
Section 3 of the Acceptable Use Policy says that torrent and P2P traffic is allowed only on servers that permit it and are shown in the app under the Torrent category. On those servers too, you may share only lawful content, for example open-source software distributions.
Current status
At the moment no Colitu server carries the Torrent tag. This means P2P is not offered on any server right now. Please don't use torrent clients through Colitu until servers with the Torrent tag appear.
We have no date for this. When a server gets the Torrent tag, it will appear in the Torrent category on the servers page and in the app.
How to check
- On colitu.com/servers, choose the Torrent category. While no server has the tag, the page shows "No servers in this category right now."
- In the Android app, use the Torrent filter on the Locations tab.
- The Torrent tag is assigned by Colitu staff. Unlike the Streaming and AI categories, it is not set by automatic tests.
Why P2P is restricted
Torrent traffic is a common source of copyright complaints and abuse reports to hosting providers. If such reports pile up, a server can be restricted or shut down, and that would hurt everyone who uses it. That is why we allow P2P only on servers where it is permitted, and we mark those servers ourselves.
What happens if the rule is broken
Copyright infringement is not allowed on any server. Depending on how serious a breach is, the Acceptable Use Policy lets us:
- send a warning,
- restrict access to certain servers or ports,
- suspend the account temporarily,
- close the account without refund for serious or repeated breaches.
The no-logs policy still applies
These rules don't change what we record. We don't log the sites you visit or the contents of the tunnel. Because of this, we cannot trace a past connection back to a user. Abuse is detected from unusual traffic at server level, such as scanning or attack patterns. What we keep and for how long is listed in Privacy.
