Connection tests
How to check your Colitu connection with the VPN test, DNS and WebRTC leak tests, ping and speed test.
With the free tools at colitu.com/tools you can see whether your VPN really works, whether anything leaks and how fast your connection is.
VPN connection test
The VPN connection test checks three things together:
- IP address: the address sites see and its country. If you are connected to Colitu, a "Colitu server" label appears.
- DNS: which server really resolves your domain name lookups.
- WebRTC: which addresses your browser's video call feature reveals.
Run the test first with the VPN off, then with the VPN on. With it on, your real address and your internet provider's DNS server should not appear.
DNS leak test
The DNS leak test makes your browser look up random names created just for this test and shows which DNS server brought those lookups to us.
- Seeing Google or Cloudflare is not a leak by itself.
- If, with the VPN on, a DNS server from your own country or your internet provider's server appears, your lookups are going outside the VPN.
Fix: on Windows use Colitu in TUN mode. If your browser's Secure DNS uses its own provider, turn it off or set it to automatic.
WebRTC leak test
The WebRTC leak test compares the public addresses your browser finds through WebRTC with the address sites see. A different public address may be your real one.
- A local address shown as
.localis normal. - If the VPN only works as a system proxy, WebRTC's UDP requests can go outside the VPN. Turn on TUN mode on Windows.
Ping test
The Ping test measures the round trip from your browser to every Colitu server and marks the fastest. For a true result, measure with the VPN off.
Because the measurement goes straight to the servers' addresses, you need to sign in; a free account is enough. We do not show server addresses publicly, to keep them from being blocked.
Speed test
The Speed test first measures latency, then downloads for about eight seconds and uploads for eight seconds from the server you choose (or the nearest one).
- The result is the speed between your computer and the Colitu server.
- On fast lines one test can use a few hundred megabytes; be careful on mobile data.
- Like the ping test, it asks you to sign in.
If the speed is lower than expected, see the Speed optimization guide.
Other tools
- Ad blocking test: whether ad and tracker domains are blocked. Details: Ad blocker.
- Browser privacy check: what sites can read from your browser without asking.
- Strong password generator: in your browser, never sent anywhere.
Do the tests store my data?
No. The DNS test makes up a random ID; which DNS servers asked about it is kept in memory for ten minutes and deleted. The other tools run only in your browser. No result is ever linked to your account.
