Using Colitu on Linux

Install Colitu on Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and other Linux distributions; learn about proxy and TUN mode and the kill switch.

Colitu для LinuxLinux kullanımı

Colitu for Linux runs on 64-bit Linux distributions (x64 and ARM64). The Linux app is currently in beta: the core features work, but it has not been tested on every distribution and desktop environment.

Installation

  1. Download the package for your distribution from colitu.com/download/linux. If you do not know your architecture, run uname -m in a terminal: x86_64 means x64, aarch64 means ARM64.
  2. Open a terminal in the download folder and install it:
DistributionCommand
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OSsudo apt install ./colitu-vpn_1.0.0_amd64.deb
Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, AlmaLinuxsudo dnf install ./colitu-vpn-1.0.0-1.x86_64.rpm
openSUSEsudo zypper install ./colitu-vpn-1.0.0-1.x86_64.rpm
OthersUnpack the .tar.gz archive and run the ColituVPN file inside

After installing, open Colitu VPN from the application menu (or type colitu-vpn in a terminal) and sign in with your account.

The packages are built from the open source code on GitHub. You can check the file with sha256sum and compare it with the SHA256SUMS file of the release.

Connecting

  1. Pick a server from the Locations list or use Best server.
  2. Click Connect on the home screen.
  3. When the connection is up, the home screen shows Connected and the timer starts.

Proxy and TUN mode

  • Proxy mode: On GNOME and KDE the system proxy is set automatically. Browsers and apps that use this setting go through Colitu. No extra rights are needed.
  • TUN mode: All traffic goes through the tunnel, including programs that make their own connections. Creating a network interface needs root, so Colitu asks for your sudo password on the first connection. The password is kept in memory only, never written to disk, and forgotten when the app closes.

If you use a desktop other than GNOME or KDE (XFCE, i3, Sway and so on), choose TUN mode.

Kill switch

In TUN mode, while the kill switch is on, traffic cannot leave outside the tunnel if the VPN drops; only the local network, the VPN servers and the Colitu account service stay reachable. The rules are added with nftables and removed automatically when the app exits, even after a crash. This needs the nftables package.

Updating and removing

  • Updating: During the beta, download the new version from colitu.com/download/linux and install it with the same command. Your account and settings are kept.
  • Removing: sudo apt remove colitu-vpn or sudo dnf remove colitu-vpn. Your personal data stays in ~/.local/share/ColituVPN; delete that folder too to remove everything.

Troubleshooting

  • TUN mode does not start: sudo must be installed and your user must have sudo rights. If you typed the password wrong, start the connection again.
  • Some apps ignore the VPN in proxy mode: They may not read the system proxy. Turn on TUN mode.
  • The app does not open: Start it from a terminal with colitu-vpn and send the error to support.
  • Another VPN is running: Two VPNs should not run at the same time. Close the other one.

For anything else: Connection problems.
