Speed optimisation

Practical ways to make your VPN faster: the right location, protocol and network settings.

Как ускорить VPNHız optimizasyonu

VPN speed depends on the distance to the server, the quality of your network and the protocol in use. These tips noticeably improve speed in most cases.

Pick a nearby, quiet server

  • Choose the location with the lowest ping (latency) on the home screen. Under 100 ms is ideal.
  • The Fast filter puts low-latency, lightly loaded servers first.
  • A country close to you is usually the fastest.

How the protocol matters

Colitu tries Hysteria2 first. Hysteria2 runs over QUIC (UDP) and is much faster than TCP-based protocols on mobile networks with packet loss. If your network restricts UDP, Colitu switches to VLESS Reality automatically. Details: Protocols.

Check your network

  • Run a speed test with the VPN off. The VPN cannot be faster than your raw connection.
  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz and move closer to the router.
  • Wait if large downloads or cloud sync are running in the background.

On the device

  • Power-saving modes can slow the processor and therefore encryption.
  • On Windows, system proxy mode for browser traffic is lighter than TUN mode.

Why is it sometimes slow?

In the evening your provider's international links can get congested. Trying another location usually helps. If one server stays slow, tell support the server name; we watch server load live.
