Anonymous usage statistics

Which anonymous numbers the apps send to improve connection quality, how they are stored and how to turn them off.

The Colitu apps (Android, iOS, Windows, Linux) and the browser extension may send anonymous, aggregate statistics so we can improve connections and Adaptive Connect. This page explains what we collect, what we never collect and how to turn it off.

What is sent?

Only numbers that describe how the connection went:

  • The result of connection attempts (success / failure), how long connecting took and the kind of failure (e.g. timeout, connection reset, blocked).
  • Unexpected disconnects and how long the session lasted.
  • Adaptive Connect recoveries: which protocol it switched from and to, how long it took, whether the warm spare took over.
  • Latencies measured to servers, and how much slower the server picked by automatic mode was than the fastest one measured.
  • Features used (e.g. split tunnelling, Shield, whether the kill switch is on).
  • Platform, app version and network type (Wi-Fi, mobile data, wired).

The country and the internet provider's number (ASN) of the network you are on are read from a signed network label the app receives while the VPN is off. Your IP address is not stored for this.

What is never sent or stored?

  • Your account, e-mail address, device identity or IP address.
  • The sites you visit, your DNS queries or the content of your traffic.
  • Your location (beyond the country).

How is it stored?

The server keeps only totals per day; individual events are not stored. The totals are kept in two separate tables that cannot be joined:

  • Network table

totals per country + internet provider + protocol. Which server you connected to is not in this table.

  • Server table

how a server looks from a given country. Your internet provider is not in this table.

This separation means a network never sits on the same row as a server, so the totals cannot lead to a single person. Because the statistics are not linked to your account, they stay unlinkable even after you delete it.

What is it for?

  • Seeing which protocol works in which country and with which internet provider, to improve Adaptive Connect's order.
  • Spotting problematic servers and regions early.
  • Making sure automatic mode always picks the fastest server.

How do I turn it off?

In the app, turn off Settings → Anonymous usage statistics. When it is off nothing is collected and the numbers waiting to be sent are deleted. Turning it off does not affect your connection or any other feature. In the Firefox extension these statistics stay off until you turn them on.
