Colitu Windows
New features, fixes and performance improvements in the Colitu apps.
v2.8.5Latest Stronger account protection and steadier connections
This version makes your account and session more secure and your connections faster and more stable.
New features
- The app now talks to the Colitu service only over certificates from the two public certificate authorities Colitu uses.
- Updates: the app now only accepts an update notice that was signed in the last 30 days.
- In 'only selected apps use the VPN' mode, name lookups of those apps now also go through the VPN.
Bug fixes
- Several hardening fixes from an independent security review: the protection service never deletes a folder it does not trust.
- Support files are saved in a protected folder.
- The local proxy is never open to other devices on your network.
- Unused old components were removed.
Performance improvements
- After a short block of the fastest connection method, the app returns to it within about a minute and a half.
- If the backup connection stops working, the app replaces it within two minutes even while background apps keep the connection busy.
- When you join a different network, the app no longer applies what it learned on the previous one.
v2.8.4 Faster recovery when you change networks
When you switch networks, the app now reconnects within seconds, and after unexpected closes your account loads right away.
Bug fixes
- When you switch networks on the same adapter, for example from home Wi-Fi to your phone's hotspot, the app notices it within seconds, shows "reconnecting" and rebuilds the connection on the new network.
- Before, it could keep saying "protected" for up to a minute and a half while pages did not open.
- The kill switch keeps blocking traffic outside the VPN meanwhile.
- After the app was closed unexpectedly, your account and plan load right away at start-up again instead of only after the next connection.
v2.8.3 Site names now always resolve inside the VPN
On some connection methods, site names were looked up outside the VPN; this is now fixed. Pages load faster and more securely.
Bug fixes
- With some connection methods, site names were looked up outside the VPN; now all methods keep them inside.
- With the kill switch off, your provider could see which sites you visited; this is no longer possible.
- With the kill switch on, site names did not resolve at all, so pages loaded slowly or not at all; this is fixed.
- The backup server path now also works with the connection methods that previously refused it.
- After the app closed unexpectedly with the kill switch on, it no longer shows 'Colitu server unreachable' at start-up.
v2.8.2 The connection check always goes through the VPN
Colitu now checks more reliably that your traffic really goes through the VPN. If the connection is broken, the app notices and reconnects.
Bug fixes
- The check that confirms your traffic goes through the VPN now always uses the VPN itself.
- With split tunnelling or bypassed sites, the check now spots a broken connection instead of showing it as working.
- When the connection is broken, the app reports it correctly and reconnects.
v2.8.1 A new safeguard for your local network
Connections to devices on your own network now go directly instead of through the VPN. Your printer, network drive and router settings keep working as usual.
Bug fixes
- A connection to a device on your own network now goes directly instead of to the VPN server.
- Your router or internet provider still cannot see which sites you visit.
- If the kill switch is set to block the local network, it stays blocked.
v2.8.0 Faster connections and a new server filter
Adaptive Connect 2.0 picks the fastest server and keeps a backup server ready to switch to if the connection drops, so the VPN stays on. New users also get a Simple mode and in-app messages.
New features
- Adaptive Connect 2.0: 'Fastest server' now truly picks the fastest server and remembers the best method for each network.
- Warm spare: a second server is kept ready while connected, and if the main one fails, your traffic moves to it within seconds.
- Faster connecting on difficult networks: the best two paths are tried at once, and in automatic mode failing servers are skipped.
- The connection is watched on every method, and the app reconnects by itself after an unexpected drop.
- Simple mode and Advanced mode: new installations start with only the essentials, and one tap shows the other options.
- Messages from Colitu inside the app, for example when you are close to your monthly data limit.
- The kill switch also allows the warm spare server, so switching to it never blocks your internet.
Performance improvements
- In a one-hour test with 11 deliberate failures, the connection was available 98.8% of the time; when the server was cut for 101 seconds, the user saw only a 5-second pause.
v2.7.0 Steadier calls and privacy mode by default
Calls and long sessions on the Fast connection now hold up better. New installations send all traffic through the VPN by default.
New features
- Calls and long sessions on the Fast connection hold up better: on supported servers the app changes its network port every 30 seconds.
- If the Fast connection stalls while your internet still works, the app moves that server to another connection method for 10 minutes.
- When the Colitu website cannot be reached from your network, the app finds the service through a signed list of alternative addresses.
- New installations send all traffic through the VPN; letting regional sites bypass the VPN is now an option you turn on yourself.
- Signing in from an unusual location can ask for a 6-digit code sent to your e-mail to protect your account.
- Clearer messages when a sign-up is refused: temporary e-mail addresses, passwords found in known data breaches, and too many sign-ups from one network.
v2.6.2 Kill switch fix and servers grouped by country
Fixed connection failures when the kill switch is on, and servers are now grouped by country. Also, servers with ad-free YouTube are tagged.
New features
- Servers are grouped by country: a country with several servers shows one row with the number of locations and the best ping; open it to see its cities.
- Servers where YouTube plays without ads show an 'Ad-free YouTube' tag.
Bug fixes
- With the kill switch on, Colitu sometimes could not reach its own server and connecting failed after a few seconds. Colitu now prepares the addresses it needs before the kill switch blocks traffic, so connecting works with the kill switch on.
- The installer's 'Launch Colitu VPN' option at the end of setup works again.
v2.6.1 Kill switch service fix and security update
The kill switch service now installs correctly and protects its data folder. If Colitu crashes while connected, the internet stays blocked until it reconnects.
New features
- The Albania server now shows its country name in the server list; no new server was added.
Bug fixes
- The kill switch service now installs correctly; if Colitu crashes while connected, the internet stays blocked until it reconnects.
- The kill switch service now protects its data folder, so another account on the same computer cannot tamper with it.
v2.6.0 Stronger protection, split tunneling, two-step sign-in
Colitu VPN 2.6.0 brings a kill switch that blocks internet even if the app crashes, split tunneling for apps and sites, two-step verification, multihop, and rotating IP.
New features
- The kill switch now runs as a separate Windows service and blocks internet if Colitu crashes.
- New installations start in all-traffic mode, and Colitu offers this mode if you use system proxy.
- Split tunneling lets you choose apps, sites, and IP addresses that bypass or only use the VPN.
- If two-step verification is on, you are asked for a code or recovery code when signing in.
- Multihop routes traffic through two servers and appears in its own section of the server list.
- Rotating IP changes your exit server every 5, 10, or 30 minutes without disconnecting.
Bug fixes
- If your plan allows fewer devices, a clear 'Use this device instead' screen appears instead of a connection error.
- A notice appears a few days before a trial ends.
- Account has a link to manual configuration for routers and other apps.
v2.5.5 Fewer disconnects, faster start
Colitu now offers more reliable connections and opens faster. It recovers automatically after internet outages.
Bug fixes
- Slow website name lookups no longer drop the connection.
- When the connection really stops, Colitu first restarts it on the same server, and only reconnects from scratch if that fails.
- When your internet goes down, Colitu keeps the VPN session, tells you, and continues when it's back.
- After an internet outage, Colitu no longer gives up on good connection methods and doesn't start with the weakest one.
- The fastest connection method no longer sends faster than your line can carry.
- When you switch between Wi-Fi and cable or to another network, the VPN moves to the new connection right away.
- Colitu opens within a few seconds even if its server responds slowly, and connects automatically.
- Connecting no longer waits up to a minute for the server; if it's slow, the last connection settings are used.
- When the computer starts, automatic connection waits longer for Wi-Fi to come up.
Performance improvements
- Colitu checks every half minute that websites can still be looked up through the VPN and repairs it when they can't.
- Disconnecting or switching servers while Colitu is repairing the connection takes effect immediately.
v2.5.4 Security and reliability update
This release has no new features; it fixes Kill switch, sign-in/out, and proxy mode issues, and improves security.
Bug fixes
- Kill switch now works from the first second of connecting in all-traffic mode.
- While Kill switch is on, programs on your computer can no longer be reached from the internet with your real address.
- Signing out after a failed reconnect no longer leaves your internet blocked.
- An expired plan no longer keeps the internet closed.
- Kill switch also works when two Windows users run Colitu at the same time.
- A session renewed while you sign out no longer comes back or wipes a new sign-in.
- A blocked or broken page from a network in between no longer signs you out.
- Signing out now removes saved connection settings, imported server settings, and support attachments you opened.
- The e-mail confirmation screen no longer sends you back to sign-in after a temporary server error.
- When a standard Windows account starts Colitu with an administrator's password, it switches to all-traffic mode instead of proxy mode and shows a message.
Performance improvements
- Colitu's program and VPN engine files can no longer be replaced by an ordinary user.
- The app runs on a newer runtime with the latest security fixes.
- Updates are checked more strictly before they are installed.
- Support attachments are saved more safely, and file types that could run a program are never opened directly.
- Diagnostic reports sent to support hide more personal data: e-mail addresses, keys, and passwords inside links.
- The installer only closes Colitu once you click Install, so cancelling the setup keeps your connection.
- "Check for updates" now says when it could not check instead of claiming you are up to date; refreshing the plan says when the server could not be reached.
- Pasting the password reset code works with spaces (for example "123 456").
- Large images in support chats no longer freeze the window, and the chat no longer refreshes in the background while Colitu is hidden in the tray.
- After a rare error at start-up the app no longer stays on the loading screen; it shows the sign-in screen instead.
v2.5.3 Russian sites through the Moscow server
When you connect to a server in Russia, Russian sites and apps now go through that server and see a Russian address. On every other server nothing changes.
Bug fixes
- When connected to the Moscow server, Russian sites and apps now go through that server and see a Russian address.
v2.5.2 Faster, more reliable connections
Backup connection methods work again, and connecting is now faster and more dependable. The app no longer tries to reconnect while Windows is shutting down.
New features
- The Colitu icon in the notification area is now bigger and easier to see.
Bug fixes
- Backup connection methods work again.
- On networks that slow down the main method, the app can connect again.
- When the first attempt is slow, the app now waits a moment longer instead of giving up.
- The first connection to a server you have never used no longer fails.
- Switching servers or reconnecting no longer hangs for up to 20 seconds.
- Cancelling a connection or picking another server takes effect immediately.
- The app no longer tries to reconnect while Windows is shutting down or signing out.
- Routine messages are no longer written, so logs sent to support show the real problem.
v2.5.1 Russian sites work without turning off the VPN
Russian apps and sites now work smoothly with the VPN on. You no longer need to disconnect.
Bug fixes
- Wildberries, Russian banks, Gosuslugi and other Russian services no longer show a 'turn off your VPN' error on Windows.
- Russian sites now connect directly with your own address, while everything else stays protected by the VPN.
- Nothing needs to be set up: it works on every server and in both connection modes.
v2.5.0 Ad blocking added
You can now turn ad blocking on or off in Colitu VPN settings. It is off by default and blocks ads and trackers when enabled.
New features
- A new "Ad blocking" switch is available in Settings → Connection.
- When on, ads and trackers are blocked in the browser and all apps using the VPN.
- No query log is kept on these servers.
- If a site or app stops working, turn the switch off; the connection restarts automatically.
- Servers in Sweden, the United Kingdom and Poland carry an "Ad blocking" label.
v2.4.4 Real ping for every server
You can now see the ping for every location in the server list. Plans are now managed on colitu.com instead of inside the app.
New features
- Every location in the server list shows its ping in milliseconds with green, amber or red signal bars.
- Ping is measured from your own computer outside the VPN tunnel and refreshes when you open the locations page.
- Plans are no longer bought inside the app; the Plan page opens your account on app.colitu.com.
Bug fixes
- Country flags are now centred inside their circle.
v2.4.3 A new connection method: Resilient
Colitu now offers a fifth connection method. Resilient is chosen automatically by the app when the others do not get through.
New features
- Added the new Resilient connection method on every server.
- Resilient keeps working on networks that slow down or freeze long connections.
- The app picks Resilient by itself when other methods fail.
- The home screen now shows Fast, Stealth, Resilient, Classic or Light instead of technical names.
v2.4.2 Password reset and free plan update
You can now reset your password inside the app and get 10 GB of free traffic every month.
New features
- "Forgot password?" on the sign-in screen now works inside the app instead of opening the website.
- Enter the six-digit code we e-mail you and choose a new password; you are signed in right away.
- Changing your password signs your account out on all other devices.
- Every account gets 10 GB of free traffic a month, and the app shows how much you have used.
- When the 10 GB are used up, a "limit reached" badge appears and you can upgrade with "Go unlimited".
- Sign-up and verification screens no longer mention the old 24-hour trial.
- Android TVs can now be signed in by scanning a QR code with your phone or at colitu.com/link.
v2.4.1 Security and privacy update
This release improves your privacy and security. We recommend installing it.
New features
- A new open source section in Settings links to Colitu's source code on GitHub.
Bug fixes
- The websites you visit are no longer recorded, and old logs are deleted.
- Sessions, connection settings and logs are now readable only by administrators.
- Each Windows user on the same computer now has their own sign-in.
- Uninstalling while connected no longer breaks browsing and removes app data.
- Shutting down or signing out of Windows now restores normal network settings.
- DNS leak protection is stronger, and the settings text explains each mode.
- A rare double reconnect and a false VPN warning were fixed.
- Leftover helper scripts were removed from the installer.
v2.4.0 Colitu VPN 2.4.0: New Design and Live Connection Animation
The Windows version of Colitu VPN now matches the look of the iPhone and Android apps. Enjoy a more modern experience with a new connect button and animations.
New features
- New design matches the iPhone and Android apps.
- New connect button with a live particle ring and connection time display.
- Sign-in screen redesigned with a turning globe of dots and a glass card.
- Location card on the home screen now has a 'Change server' button and a check mark when connected.
- Server, plan, and support badges are now clearer.
- The first-run setup window also uses the new design.
Performance improvements
- Animation pauses when the window is minimised or in the tray, reducing CPU usage.
v2.3.1 Automatic updates and easier email confirmation
Colitu now updates itself automatically and email confirmation is done inside the app.
New features
- When the app starts, it checks for a new version and asks if you want to update.
- You can postpone the update, but critical releases cannot be postponed.
- Email confirmation is now inside the app: enter the 6-digit code.
- You can paste the code from the email with spaces, like '123 456'.
- If you confirm your email on colitu.com, the app detects it and signs you in automatically.
v2.3.0 Live support and new server categories
You can now chat with support inside the app, pick servers by category, and see clearer error messages.
New features
- A chat button in the title bar lets you message the support team inside the app.
- You can attach screenshots, PDF, TXT or ZIP files to your support request.
- Support replies show an unread badge and a notification.
- Optional automatic diagnostics add app and connection details to your support request.
